Course Description:

Kundalini Yoga, an expression of Hindu Tantric philosophy and practice, is an ancient and astonishingly comprehensive psychological system. It addresses the development of the psyche from the most primal levels to the conditions of transcendent consciousness. Jung saw in the symbolism of the chakras one of the deepest and most extensive expressions of the entire individuation process.

While Kundalini practitioners usually orient towards the goal of spiritual perfection, the more esoteric and mystical tantric perspectives emphasize the enormous value placed on the opening of the fourth chakra.

Educational Goal:

In this presentation we will explore the profound change in consciousness that occurs in the fourth chakra. Here, a true union of feminine and masculine principles – a mindful, conscious living in a dynamic unity of instinct, matter, and spirit - unfolds. Utilizing the lens of the rich symbolic world of Tantrism and the insights of C.G. Jung, we will closely examine these fourth chakra mysteries along with their implications for each level of conscious living.

About the Speaker

Charles Zeltzer, PhD has been a Jungian Analyst since 1992. He lives and practices on the central coast of California. Charles is a former training director of the C.G. Jung Institute of Los Angeles. He has recently been named Scholar in Residence at the C.G. Jung Study Center of Southern California. He teaches and supervises in the analyst training programs of the Los Angeles Institute and the Interregional Society of Jungian Analysts.

He was a long-time member of the editorial board of the Jungian journal, Psychological Perspectives, and has been the guest editor for special issues on Jung and the East, and fairy tales.

Charles has spoken throughout the United States and Europe. He has lectured on many aspects of the religious dimension of the psyche. These include the relationship of the symbolism and experience of the chakras to alchemy and the individuation process, the alchemical god Mercurius as a psychological function, illness and transformation, the mermaid and her function in the male psyche, and the Roman Catholic solemn high mass as an alchemical operation.

Charles has specialized in leading seminars on Jung’s alchemical works, including a line-by-line discussion of Jung’s magnum opus, Mysterium Coniunctionis. He is currently completing a five-year, line-by-line reading of Jung’s Red Book.

The material presented in this public program is based on an article of the same name, to be published in a book of essays on alchemy. The book will be published in 2027 by the Swiss publisher, Daimon Verlag, in both English and German editions.

Learning Objectives:

At the end of the program, participants will be able to:

1. Identify how the chakra system is a prototype for the process of

psychological self-realization that Jung called individuation.

2. Define the technique of amplification of symbols from mythology

and religious imagery, and explain how it facilitates psychological

development.

3.  Describe the fundamental shift in the psychology and behavior of

the individual that occurs in the 4th chakra.

4.  Utilizing a dream as an example, apply how the symbolism of that

dream pertains to the psychological dynamics of the 4th chakra.

5.  Describe circulatio as it is understood in Kundalini, and discuss its

function in a process of self-reflection.
